ABOUT THE PROJECT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

WHAT IS GREEN POWER?

The Green Power philosophy, community outreach, about GKN

ABOUT THE CAR

Design development, aerodynamics, material selection

ADDITIVE MANUFACTURE

3D printing, topological optimisation, weight reduction, rapid manufacturing, efficient production

THE DESIGN

Electric Motor

A standardised 240W, 24V electric motor is used to power the car, everyone has the same motor so the focus is on efficiency in the design

Nuvinci CVP

A Continuously Variable Planetary transmission made by Nuvinci allows for a infinitiley variable gears between 0.5 underdrive and 1.5 overdrive

Road Bike Wheels

High pressure tubeless 16" road bike wheels with carbon covers to reduce drag and minimise rolling resistance

Bearing Hangers

3D Printed bearing hangers, built at GKN Additive Manufacturing Centre - Filton out of a cutting edge carbon fibre/Nylon blend.

LEARN MORE

Samagaga Differential

The straight differential by Samagaga will allow the best power transfer to the wheels when turning whilst keeping the weight of the car low

Roll Cage

The frame incorporates front and rear titanium roll bars to protect the driver

Helmet Fairing

The helmet fairing improves the aerodynamic performance, 3D printed in the additive manufacturing department of GKN out of ASA plastic

Nose Cone

The front piece of the nose is made from a deformable plastic filled with a high density foam as an added safety feature

Wheel Fairings

Each team has the same motor and batteries, we are using wheel fairings to reduce our aerodynamic drag. The rear wheels will be fully encased within the body

ABOUT US

ABOUT US

GKN Aerospace is one of the world’s largest independent first tier suppliers to the global aviation industry. They employ approximately 17,000 people in more than 62 locations across three continents.

We are a group of apprentices who are currently enrolled on their award winning apprenticeship scheme based at Filton and Western Approach. During the summer of 2016 we were given the opportunity to undertake a project of our choosing, we decided the most challenging project would be to enter the Greenpower F24+ championship.

We will be designing and building an electric race car from scratch, utilising materials and processes used across both the Filton and Western Approach sites.
